20 Years - SF Junior Giants in San Bruno

On Saturday, July 12, Junior Giants, which is sponsored by the San Francisco Giants, celebrated its 20th year in San Bruno.  Mike LaCoss, who pitched for the Giants from 1986-1991, graced our City by throwing out the first pitch on our Opening Day at Greenberg Field.  Mike, along with his wife, Theresa, spent the day in San Bruno taking photographs with our players and signing autographs.  It was truly an honor to have Mike LaCoss as our first Giants player ever to attend our games here in San Bruno.  Also, on-hand for our memorable Opening Day, was our Vice Mayor, Rico Medina.

For background purposes, San Bruno Junior Giants is a free, non-competitive, co-ed baseball program for under-served youth, ages 7-13.  Working together with local volunteers, such as Bob and Lorry Greenberg, Junior Giants reaches into communities and offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball during the summer while also discovering the importance of self-esteem and respect.

Entering the 21st season, Junior Giants annually serves over 20,000 participants in 90+ leagues and serves as a positive alternative to unhealthy activities for youth.  Junior Giants is more than just baseball and offers several distinct programs to further enrich a player’s experience.  Players learn the Junior Giants “Four Bases of Character Development”: Confidence, Teamwork, Leadership, and Integrity, as well as the importance of Education, Health, and Violence Prevention.
