4 Take Action That Probably Saved Lives In San Bruno CA

San Bruno CA Chief of Police Barberini reports on 1 January 2018 Actions

Article Source: City of San Bruno CA

At the February 13 2018 San Bruno CA City Council meeting, Chief of Police Barberini reported:

Early in the morning hours of January 1, 2018, Darryl Sepulveda, Ernesto Martinez-Medrano, Manuel Macias-Sandoval, and Jennifer Andrea Leon-Sanchez were in attendance at a New Year’s Eve Party on Atlantic Avenue in the City of San Bruno. During the course of the party, another attendee began to cause a disturbance that concerned others and negatively impacted the gathering. The host of the party instructed the subject causing the disturbance to leave. This subject became upset at being told to leave and threatened to return to the party with a firearm and shoot the other attendees.

A short time later this subject did, in fact, return to the party in possession of a shotgun. He knocked on the garage door of the residence and demanded to be allowed back inside. Realizing that this subject was holding a firearm, Mr. Martinez-Medrano and Mr. Sepulveda immediately developed a plan to disarm the subject. Upon opening the garage door, Mr. Martinez-Medrano and Mr. Sepulveda grabbed the firearm away from the subject and then detained him until police officers responded to the scene. Recognizing what had just occurred, Ms. Leon-Sanchez and Mr. Macias-Sandoval immediately provided assistance to Mr. Sepulveda and Mr. Martinez-Medrano in safely detaining the subject until San Bruno Police Officers arrived and took him into custody.

While the police department generally discourages individuals from placing themselves in harm’s way and always advocates that 911 be dialed in the event of an emergency, there was clearly an exigency in this instance that required immediate action. The actions of these four individuals likely prevented a critical incident from becoming much worse. On behalf of the men and women of the San Bruno Police Department, I commend and thank Darryl Sepulveda, Ernesto Martinez-Medrano, Manuel Macias-Sandoval for their initiative, swift action, and courage in addressing and mitigating a very dangerous situation.
