Why a little formality in the workplace might not be such a bad idea.
A casual work environment has its benefits. However, it can easily slip into an unprofessional and overly chummy atmosphere leading to unwanted questions and comments.
Reestablishing a boundary can be just as awkward. So what is the answer?
If your communication style has declined to using, "Hey, dude.", you might want to consider a new standard.
In the meantime, here are 11 things you might not want to say to your boss:
1) "You never told me." (Even if he/she didn't, don't say it.)
Option: "I'm sorry, I don't recall hearing it. But I'll get right on it."
2) "Why can't you do it yourself?" (They don't have to, that's why they've got you.)
Option: None.
3) "I don't have time; can't you get someone else to do it?" (Apparently, they believe in your capabilities.)
Option: "I'd be glad to. Would you like me to set [insert current projects] aside to complete this?"
4) "I don't think it's fair that you take a longer lunch than me." (Are you kidding!)
Option: None.
5) "Your husband is really rude to me when he calls in." (What is your point? What do you want her to do about it?)
Option: Do your job; answer politely at all times and move on.
6) "You don't pay me enough to stress myself out over this." (Okay, but are you doing your best?)
Option: Is the task really causing you to "stress out", or your attitude about the task? Hmm?
7) "Hope we aren't gonna be too busy today, I'm hungover." (Seriously?)
Option: Get a grip and keep it to yourself.
8) "I'm taking off a little early today...have a job interview." (Again, seriously?)
Option: Hope you get the job!
9) "Hold on." (As you finish posting a selfie.)
Option: Stay off social media during work hours.
10) "So, had any hot dates lately?" (None of your business!)
Option: Did you have a good weekend?
11) "Hey, would you watch my dog this weekend?" (Unless your boss has offered or runs a doggy-hotel and spa, don't ask!)
Option: Don't bother your boss with your personal prob's; that's what family and friends are for.
Just because your boss doesn't say anything, don't assume he/she likes it. Be aware of their facial expression next time you holler, "Dude, just chill."
