📰 News we're reading

1. Suspect arrested in connection with San Bruno shooting (eastbaytimes.com) — San Bruno police arrested a 32-year-old San Francisco man after a Thursday night shooting near El Camino Real and San Marco Avenue, where officers found numerous shell casings but no reported injuries. Investigators later discovered an unregistered gun and ammunition at a nearby residence, and the convicted felon now faces charges related to negligent firearm discharge and illegal possession.

2. San Mateo County Students Lock Phones Away, Then Panic Hits During Lockdown (newsbreak.com) — High schoolers in San Bruno and neighboring cities now lock their phones in signal-blocking pouches all school day under a new San Mateo Union High School District policy. Some students, especially at Aragon High, worry the rule could leave them unable to reach family or call for help during emergencies, while district leaders say phones should generally stay off during active threats.

3. Feds reveal timeline for closure of National Archives in SF (asamnews.com) — Plans to close the National Archives' San Bruno facility and move its records to Kansas are moving ahead on a two- to three-year timeline, despite pushback from Bay Area lawmakers and community members. Critics say shutting the San Bruno site, which holds records for California and the Pacific region, would make it far harder and costlier for local families and researchers to access immigration and military history documents.

4. ICYMI: Pelosi Joins Congressional Efforts to Protect Federal Services and Uphold Americans' Rights (house.gov) — One of the key issues for local readers is Nancy Pelosi's push to keep the National Archives' San Bruno facility open, arguing closure would scatter vital California records and make them harder to access. She also joined several Democratic efforts on housing, energy assistance, health care, public lands, voting rights, and Title IX enforcement that could indirectly affect Bay Area residents' services and protections.
