Do YOU take your bike on CalTrain?

Article Source: CalTrain

Greetings Bicycle Commuters and Supporters!

We've got good news and bad news.

Find out what's happening in San Brunofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

First the good news -

Caltrain has applied for funding to buy more rail cars to run eight-car electrified trains instead of six-car trains. This means more capacity for both seats and bikes!

Now the bad news -

Caltrain is still proposing electrified trains with NO dedicated seats within view of bikes, an invitation for bike theft. In response to public pressure, Caltrain staff have finally agreed to review electrified car design at the next Joint Powers Board (Caltrain board) meeting. We need to pack the room to stop a layout that promotes bike theft!

Joint Powers Board meeting 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 11 - 250 San Carlos Avenue, San Carlos

Please let us know if you can make it and we'll provide more info.

Suggested talking points:

  • Thank Caltrain for seeking funding to run longer electrified trains in a mixed electric/diesel fleet in 2022
  • Express concern about electrified car layout because (1) no seats within view of bikes encourages bike theft, and (2) it's unsafe to block emergency exit windows with stacked bikes
  • Explain that cameras will not stop bike theft
  • Request that eight-car electrified trains hold 96 bikes per train with seats near bikes and seats next to emergency exit windows
  • Request that seven-car diesel trains have four bike cars or 96 bikes per train
  • Explain how 96 bikes per train will benefit the community - more people biking, less pollution, less traffic congestion, etc.
  • Include your city of residence after your name

Report all bicycle bumps

Please report all bicycle bumps using Caltrain’s bicycle bump report form, which automatically sends a tweet on Twitter. Reporting bumps is critical to show Caltrain that more bike space is needed now and on future electrified trains.

Please forward this email to other bike riders and anyone who cares about bicycle commuting.

Thank you for your support!

More bikes, no bumps,

Shirley Johnson
