Caltrain staff have announced that they will conduct a bicycle security review in response to bike riders' concerns that no seats within view of bikes will encourage bike theft. Now we need to hold Caltrain to its promise of increased bike capacity on electrified trains.
At the March 1 Caltrain Board meeting, staff will discuss a grant application to buy more rail cars for eight-car trains (instead of six-car). Please support 96 bike spaces per eight-car train. You can help by:

Suggested talking points:
- Express concern that Caltrain staff's current proposal for six-car electrified trains has 25% fewer seats and 7% less bike capacity than today's trains
- Express enthusiasm that staff have applied for funding to launch electrified service with eight-car trains to increase capacity for both seats and bikes in 2022
- Emphasize that eight-car electrified trains with 96 bike spaces per train will fully satisfy the Caltrain Board's 2015 directive for 8:1 ratio of seats-to-bikes
- Explain why more bike capacity is needed
- Thank Caltrain for planning a bike security review to find ways to prevent bike theft
- Include your city of residence after your name Staff will tell you their proposal meets the 8:1 ratio (which is technically correct), but they achieve this by significantly reducing seat capacity. This is going in the wrong direction!

Background Information
In 2015, the Caltrain Board unanimously approved more bike capacity at a ratio of 8:1 seats-to-bikes on electrified trains, overriding staff's recommendation for the same bike capacity as today. However, staff's current plan reduces bike capacity compared with today. Staff will tell you their proposal meets the 8:1 ratio (which is technically correct), but they achieve this by significantly reducing seat capacity. This is going in the wrong direction!Staff respond to concerns about decreased bike capacity by saying they will run one more train per hour in 2022. That helps, but still won't meet demand. Caltrain already needs that extra train today! Plus the board approved more bike spaces in train capacity (bikes per train), not line capacity (bikes per hour). Instead of reducing train capacity, Caltrain needs to run eight-car trains with 96 bike spaces per train to properly meet the board’s 2015 mandate.Report all Bicycle BumpsPlease report all bicycle bumps using Caltrain’s bicycle bump report form, which automatically sends a tweet on Twitter. Reporting bumps is critical to show Caltrain that more bike space is needed now and on future electrified trains. Please forward this email to other bike riders and anyone who cares about bicycle commuting.
