San Carlos Airport Prepping for Burning Man Charter Flights

“Burner Express” pilots asked to use quietest arrival, departure settings

Redwood City — San Mateo County residents may notice increased traffic from San Carlos Airport beginning next week as the “Burner Express” begins charter flights to the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

The San Carlos Airport, and others in the Bay Area, are used for the charter flights to and from the Black Rock City Airport during Burning Man which this year runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 3. During that time, residents may notice an uptick in aircraft traffic. However, airport staff are working with “Burner Express” staff to mitigate possible noise impacts.

“We met with Burner Express staff to emphasize the importance of using the quietest arrival and departure settings possible when operating into and out of the San Carlos Airport,” said Airport Manager Gretchen Kelly. “We’re happy to be a small part of participant’s Burning Man experience but are mindful that their fun isn’t a burden to those on the ground.”

All charter aircraft operators pay a $75 landing fee at the San Carlos Airport. The airport does not have any available overnight vehicle parking for charter passengers due to ongoing construction projects.
