Family-Owned San Carlos Bookstore Partners with Community to Encourage Children to Read
SACRAMENTO – Senator Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo/Santa Clara Counties, honored The Reading Bug and owners Lauren and Diane Savage this week as the Small Business of the Year in the 13th Senate District.
The Reading Bug and the owners of the independent bookshop for children and families were among the small businesses and small business owners who were celebrated during California Small Business Day at the Sacramento Convention Center on Wednesday (June 10).
The California Small Business Association and more than 20 state governmental agencies and 25 small business organizations joined members of the Legislature to honor small businesses from across the state for their hard work in their communities and their success. State legislators were invited to select a small business in their districts to be highlighted in the recognition program.
In commending The Reading Bug, Lauren Savage and her mother-in-law, Diane, Senator Hill said, “Since opening your doors in 2009, you have worked to bring notable authors to San Carlos and schools throughout the Peninsula to encourage children to read. You have also worked to enrich our community as a member of the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and through your partnerships with local hospitals.”
“I am proud to name The Reading Bug the Small Business of the Year in the 13th Senate District,” said Senator Hill, who praised Lauren and Diane Savage for “their strong commitment to literacy and the children of our community.”
“We are so honored and grateful for this special recognition,” said Lauren Savage, who with her family learned from Senator Hill earlier this spring that The Reading Bug has been selected for the award.
“We’re thrilled to be here and excited that The Reading Bug is among the small businesses in the spotlight today,” said Diane Savage, who traveled with her daughter-in-law to Sacramento for the ceremony Wednesday.
Lauren and Diane Savage call their shop a “family operation,” saying it’s not only family-run, it’s also designed to be a family place. The Savages envisioned The Reading Bug as “a place to nurture a love for reading and foster activities that involve family members of all ages,” said Lauren Savage. “And our goal,” added Diane Savage, “is to serve as a community resource.”
