There are no major construction projects at this time.

Installation

Communications Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS) Positive Train Control (PTC) Project

The CBOSS PTC Project is an advanced signal system that will equip the corridor and the trains with federally-mandated safety technology and will increase system capacity to help accommodate future ridership demand.

The project will monitor and, if necessary, control train movement in the event of human error. This will increase safety by:

• Eliminating the risk of train-to-train collisions.
• Reducing risk of potential derailments by enforcing speed limits.
• Providing additional safety for railroad workers on the tracks.  

• Improving grade crossing performance to reduce gate downtime and improve local traffic circulation.

The CBOSS PTC Project is also a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program, which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor by 2019. An electrified Caltrain will be cleaner, quieter, and will upgrade the system to provide faster and/or more frequent service to more stations and more riders.

To implement the project, at various locations, Caltrain will be identifying utilities, digging a small trench and/or boring close to the tracks to install a fiber optic cable. In order to maintain daytime train service, Caltrain will be performing some of this work at night.

San Carlos and Belmont 
Day work will occur July 21 – July 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to identify utility lines. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Redwood City
Day work will occur July 21 – July 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pull inner-duct through existing conduit in the ground and splice/test fiber optic cable. Crews will also splice and test fiber optic cable on the Dumbarton Spur. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Menlo Park 
Day work will occur July 21 – July 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pull inner-duct through existing conduit in the ground and splice/test fiber optic cable. Crews will also splice and test fiber optic cable on the Dumbarton Spur. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Sunnyvale
Day work will occur July 21 – July 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pull inner-duct through existing conduit in the ground and splice/test fiber optic cable. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Night work will occur July 21 – 22 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be boring and/ or digging a small trench to install conduit for a fiber optic cable. Neighbors may experience some minor installation noise during this time; lights will be used in the area to help provide visibility. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Unincorporated San Mateo County, Atherton, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Santa Clara, San Jose 
Day work will occur July 21 – July 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pull inner-duct through existing conduit in the ground and splice/test fiber optic cable. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

Maintenance

Caltrain will perform routine maintenance at several locations next week. To avoid disruptions to service, the work will mainly take place Saturday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be some construction noise but crews will work as quietly as possible. San Francisco to San Jose
Saturday, July 19, to Friday, July 25, crews will pressure wash and perform janitorial work at Caltrain stations between the San Francisco and Tamien stations. 

San Francisco
Monday, July 21, to Thursday, July 24, crews will replace ties at the San Francisco Rail Yard at 4th and King streets. Monday, July 21, to Wednesday, July 23, crews will resurface rail between the 22nd Street and Bayshore stations.

Santa Clara
Monday, July 21, to Thursday, July 24, crews will weld and grind rail between the Lawrence and Santa Clara stations.

San Jose
Thursday, July 24, crews will resurface rail at the Diridon station.
