Caltrain Board Unanimously Approves Fare Changes

The Caltrain Board of Directors at its July meeting approved a series of changes to its codified tariff, the legal document that dictates Caltrain’s fare policies.

The board approved the changes after seeking input from customers and the public over a two-month period through four public meetings and a public hearing.

The fare policy changes include:

• The Caltrain Executive Director will have the authority to charge parking fees of up to $25 a day at impacted stations for special events at the San Mateo Event Center and professional sports venues. The change is effective on Aug. 1, 2014.
•  As a way of encouraging the use of the Clipper card, the Bay Area’s fare-payment card, the cost of paper One-way tickets will be increased by 25 cents and Day passes by 50 cents. The cost of a One-way ride will remain the same for those using Clipper (Day passes aren’t available on Clipper). Current One-way Ticket and Day Pass customers already pay a 25-cent and 50-cent, respectively, difference from those paying with Clipper. Monthly Pass and 8-ride Ticket prices will remain the same. The fare changes are effective on Oct. 5, 2014.
• Also effective Oct. 5, the cost of the Go Pass will be increased by $15 to $180 per participant, with minimum participation level of $15,120. In 2016, the cost of the Go Pass will increase to $190 per participant, with minimum participation level of $15,960.   
• The “Youth” classification, which provides a 50 percent discount over the full fare, will be expanded from 17 years to 18 years effective Jan. 1, 2015.
