Capuchino's Luevano Looks to Lead Young Volleyball Team

Sophomore outside hitter Lili Luevano is expected to play an impact role in the Mustangs' season.

two-sport athlete Lili Luevano has a daunting task ahead of her—to turn the young Mustang volleyball team into a contender. The 5-foot-8 outside hitter was part of the varsity team as a freshman, speaking volumes of her ability to play the game. Luevano also played frosh-soph softball last season, and she could be competing for the starting catcher job later this spring.

San Bruno Patch caught up with Luevano at a team practice.

San Bruno Patch: With your volleyball team only having two seniors, you're considered the leader of the team. How do you take on that responsibility and what are some of the things you do at practice and during games to take on that role?

Lili Luevano: I like to think of myself as a leader in general but this team is really close, which makes that role a lot easier. Nilo and Janet (varsity coaches) are also extremely supportive. During practice I lead by example: being focused, showing support and encouraging them as much as possible.

Patch: Your team went 4-15 last season, snatching only one win in league play. How different are things with this team and how do you expect to perform this year?

Luevano: I'm really excited, the new girls bring a different dynamic to the team and I'm looking forward to a good season.

Patch: You picked up your first win in the season opener in a 3-0 victory against Wallenberg High. How does that impact the team's confidence and how close do you feel you are to league-season form?

Luevano: It's always great to start the season with a win. We're really pumped up for games to start and it shows we're on are way to getting ready for the season.

Patch: What are your personal goals for the end of this season and what are some areas of improvement that you're looking to polish up?

Luevano: I'm looking forward to improve in the back row and polish up on my hits with the goal being to win more games this year.

Patch: What was your most memorable moment last season and why was it so special?

Luevano: Our Sequoia match last year was the first game that I started and played 'til the end. I was really proud of myself. I played a great game beginning it with my own kill. I won't forget this achievement.

Patch: How would you describe your style of play as an outside hitter? Are you an hard-hitting OH or more of a pinpoint-accurate type of player?

Luevano: Volleyball has always been a rec team sport for me playing for my school in middle school, but since I got on varsity last year I have had to work really hard to up my game. As I progress I hope to be able to be both of those, but at the moment with my strength I am more of a hard-hitting outside.

Patch: Your teammates mentioned your passing ability as a skill that sets you apart from other outside hitters. Is that a natural trait or something you've added to your arsenal along the years?

Luevano: Well I have had to work on my passing a lot. It's kind of a joke with the team, but I have definitely had to put time into that skill.

Patch: Talk about your competitiveness and what are some instances in which it shows during a game? What effect do you see it playing on you and on your teammates?

Luevano: I am really competitive, I always want to be on the court playing and do what I have to for the win. But I also want to have fun and play good volleyball. I know with my hitting I'm looking for the hard kill and I know my team feeds off the high energy I bring onto the court.

Patch: With last year's varsity starting catcher moved on to the next level. How do you like your chances competing for the starting spot this year?

Luevano: Im hoping for a spot on varsity. Im working on improving my game for softball and looking forward to jumping into the season in the spring.

Patch: Last year's team made a statement winning the CCS Division III crown. How do you like your chances of repeating that this season?

Luevano: We have a great group of girls on the team. I believe they all have it in them to do it again. I'm excited to see what happens next season.

Patch: For those who haven't seen you last year at the frosh-soph level, what are some things they should expect to see from you this season?

Luevano: Well I hope to catch for Cap. I'm really dedicated to that position and I want follow in the footsteps of Jamie Navarro and fulfill the expectations people have for me.

Patch: How do you expect your transition from frosh-soph to varsity to be and what are some aspects that need improvement from your part?

Luevano: It's a big step from frosh-soph to varsity. I got a little taste of it last year. It's a faster, more intense game, but it pushes me to work harder in every aspect and become a better softball player all-around.

Patch: The team expects five returning seniors and two experienced sophomores to suit up. How do you go about establishing your leadership in an older/more experienced team?

Luevano: I plan on catching and with this position comes leadership and control. I feel through my playing I will get to establish this.
