Tips for Food Safety in Summer
Summertime holds the promise of lazy days, plenty of sunshine, and food on the grill. Yet summer is also the peak season for food poisoning. Warmer temperatures create ideal conditions for foodborne germs to grow, and perishable foods must be refrigerated more quickly than during cooler weather – within 1 hour if temperatures are above 90°F outside.
New Report: Listeria Outbreaks Linked to Soft Cheeses
Contaminated soft cheese made in unclean conditions continues be an important cause of listeriosis outbreaks in the United States, according to a CDC report published this month in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. A review of listeriosis outbreaks reported to CDC during 1998–2014 found that 30% were associated with soft cheese. Most outbreaks were linked to Hispanic-style soft cheese, such as queso fresco, and often affected pregnant Hispanic women and their newborns. The article highlights the importance of following pasteurization protocols and sanitation measures to avoid contamination after pasteurization.
