Chefs to Lead Tours at Sunday's Farmers' Market

The new Beekeepers Co-Op will sell its raw honeycomb, unfiltered honey and more.

At the downtown  Sunday, shoppers can take a chef-led tour. Chefs Mario Hernandez and Erica Emme will highlight produce at its seasonal peak, explain what to look for when you purchase at the market, discuss fun new ways to use market finds and share recipe ideas.

The tours are free and depart from the market information booth at 10:30 a.m. and noon.

The featured produce is the cucumber, and the featured grower is Frog Hollow Farms, a certified organic, 133-acre East Contra Costa County farm that delivers sun dried peaches, nectarines, apricots, and cherries as well as preserves, chutneys and marmalades.

The Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association invites shoppers to take advantage of food stamp and WIC summertime specials. When EBT shoppers buy $10 in produce, they enjoy a bonus of $5.

Market-goers can also enjoy the folk and jazz stylings of guitarist Dennis Campagna.

The weather is expected to be a pleasant 65 degrees. Here's what shoppers can choose from at the outdoor market, which runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.:

  • Stone fruits (apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines)
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Orchids
  • Dried almonds

The new San Mateo Beekeepers Co-op markets its homemade honeycomb, unfiltered wildflower honey, and other products, and Aunt Kitty Creations is back with jams and preserves.
