County of San Mateo Appoints New Human Services Agency Director

Nicole Pollack served in interim after former director joined County Manager’s Office

Redwood City — The County of San Mateo is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicole Pollack as the new director of its Human Services Agency, the department largely responsible for administering safety net services in collaboration with other agencies. “It is an honor to be appointed to the role of agency director for the County of San Mateo’s Human Services Agency. I am excited by the opportunity to serve our residents, the Board of Supervisors and County Manager,” Pollack said. “I am also excited about renewing and refining the ways we deliver vital programs to ensure a healthy, safe, prosperous and collaborative community.” Pollack had been serving in the role on an interim basis since October when former director Iliana Rodriguez joined the County Manager’s Office as its newest deputy county manager.

The Board of Supervisors confirmed Pollack to the post at its last meeting. Prior, she was HSA’s assistant director from October 2014 until her naming to the interim position. Rodriguez said HSA’s employees and clients are in very good hands with Pollack at the helm. “Nicole is bright, thoughtful and deeply invested in strengthening families and the community. I feel very lucky to have worked with her during my time at HSA and am proud to now watch her lead,” Rodriguez said. As director of HSA, Pollack will oversee a department of nearly 770 employees focused on employment services, economic self-sufficiency, center on homelessness, veteran’s services and children and family services. HSA also maintains strategic partnerships with external organizations to expand the safety net for the county’s vulnerable populations. Pollack brings with her a long commitment to providing social services, with a particular interest in breaking the dynamics and barriers that keep families in poverty. She founded a private nonprofit aimed at eradicating poverty through adult mentoring programs. She began her county government career in Stanislaus County, first in its Department of Employment and Training and then its Community Services Agency where she managed all public assistance programs. In 2007, she joined the Merced County Human Services Agency as deputy director and in 2011 was named director of social services for Nevada County. She joined the County of San Mateo as its workforce and economic development director before moving up the ranks to assistant director. Pollack holds master’s degrees in both counseling psychology and public administration.
