The Social Host Ordinance will hold adults accountable for any underage drinking occurring in their homes. As an amendment to the Loud or Unruly Gatherings Ordinance, the Social Host Ordinance will authorize law enforcement to cite adults with a civil fine starting at $1500 for the first violation for hosting parties with underage drinking.

It is essential to educate the public that the purpose of the ordinance is to use policy as a prevention tool to avoid potentially tragic outcomes caused by underage drinking. By enacting Social Host Ordinance, it encourages conversation to occur between parents and their children that alcohol-related activities are not accepted in the home. With the adopted policy, the community has the right to be aware of potential consequences affected by the ordinance. Therefore, it has the ability to urge parents to actively be aware of the events that occur in their household at all times.

Ultimately, the bigger picture of the Social Host Ordinance is to assure that our community works together to change the norms of underage drinking occurring in the home. The policy will secure a sustainable solution to address one piece to the complex puzzle of reducing access and use to underage drinkers. All in all, we hope to bridge the communication gap between adults and youth about intolerable alcohol-related activities.
