The Skyline College Promise

Dear friends, I have teamed with Skyline College to support the Promise Scholars Program that will transform the lives of hundreds of young adults and their families. Promise provides incoming full-time students with comprehensive support including a full scholarship for one year, academic support, dedicated counseling and career and professional development. The program, which serves about 500 students currently, is only in its second year but has already proved successful evidenced by the higher number of students who continue on in their studies compared to those not enrolled in the program. Skyline is looking to expand the program to serve about 700 students and the ultimate hope is that the program will be extended to the College of San Mateo and Cañada College. I am incredibly impressed by the fact that 64.4 percent of individuals enrolled in the pilot program are first-generation college students and many of them reside in District 5. This can be an incredible life-changing experience for those seeking a higher education. Students receive $1,875 on average in direct resources in the first year of program enrollment. The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved my request to award the program $5,000 from my office’s Measure K district-specific budget. The goal is to greatly expand the county’s support of the program as it continues to prove its benefits to the community. Participants must enroll full-time (minimum 12 units) during the academic year during the duration of the program; maintain academic progress and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0; complete courses at a rate above 50 percent (scholars must successfully complete and pass more than half of their courses in every semester they are part of the Promise Scholars Program); declare a major within their first year at Skyline College; complete a comprehensive Student Educational Plan (SEP) their first year at Skyline College; and regularly meet with your dedicated Promise Scholar Program counselor.

District 5 Together:
A World United What a day it was Saturday, March 31 at Jefferson High School as our office hosted the second annual District 5 Together culture and resource fair. This year’s theme was “A World United.” I want to thank all the individuals who work for San Mateo County and our nonprofit partners for setting up over 50 resource tables providing information on health care, housing, transportation, behavioral health, public safety and so much more. There was an orchestra, live band, the Jefferson High School marching band, free food provided by various clubs at the high school, face painting and 10 amazing dance troupes that provided the entertainment. This year, we named for the first time our “Citizens of the Year” for District 5, our “Student of the Year,” “Business of the Year” and “Law Enforcement Official of the Year.” The honorees for “Citizen of the Year” are: Sal Torres representing Daly City; Robert Brizuela representing Broadmoor Village; Vice Mayor Joanne del Rosario representing Colma; Mitch Bull representing Brisbane; Kristie Postel representing San Bruno; and Cindy Alger representing South San Francisco. Our “Student of the Year” is El Camino High School student Monique Ray who serves on the county’s Youth Commission. It was a special privilege to present Daly City police Officer Lee Magalong with the “Law Enforcement Official of the Year.” Magalong is a huge presence in our schools helping to ensure our children get educations in a safe environment. Our “Business of the Year” is Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant at 6582 Mission St., Daly City. I’d like to thank the elected officials who participated in this event including Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo, San Bruno Mayor Rico Medina, San Bruno Vice Mayor Marty Medina, Daly City Councilman Glenn Sylvester, South San Francisco Vice Mayor Karyl Matsumoto, Burlingame Vice Mayor Donna Colson and Millbrae Councilwoman Ann Scheider. Also in attendance were Marie Brizuela, Clayton Koo and Manufou Liaiga-Anoa’i from the Jefferson Elementary School District Board. In attendance representing the Jefferson Union High School District Board of Trustees were Kalimah Salahuddin and Rosie Tejada. Jennifer Blanco from the San Bruno Park School District Board of Trustees also attended as well as Deputy Superintendent of the San Mateo County Office of Education Dr. Gary Waddell. A very special thanks to Rowena (Reyna) Poti-Meafua for her help in gathering dozens of Jefferson students to volunteer at this event. Jefferson High School was the center of the District 5 universe during this culture and resource fair and its students shined the brightest.

Can’t wait to do it again next year! Join me for office hours in the district I will start conducting office hours in District 5 starting this weekend at various locations in North San Mateo County. We are doing this to make it easier to have face-to-face conversations with constituents who may not be easily capable of visiting our office at the County Center in Redwood City.

Our next office hours will be held at Madhouse Coffee, 402 Visitacion Ave., Brisbane, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7.

Look for future office hours to be held in Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Broadmoor Village and of course Daly City.

I look forward to hearing your concerns and updating you on the actions taken by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to keep our communities safe and healthy.
