What exciting times are upon us! For over 25 years, Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC), a respected sustainability non-profit with the "think global, act local" motto, has taken the lead in interacting with and documenting how local cities in San Mateo County have performed on a variety of sustainability metrics. Today, as we are too often reminded by environmental upheavals, we need to do more than measure past performance. We need to empower people to live more sustainably by sharing knowledge, best-practices and resources! We hope you will take the time to attend some of the many events taking place during Earth Day week. For your information, below is a list of events taking place in San Mateo County to inspire you!
My name is Christine Kohl-Zaugg. It is with great pleasure and excitement that I have recently joined SSMC as the organization's Executive Director, following into the footsteps of its highly respected past leaders. Throughout my career, I was fortunate to work on many projects at the forefront of sustainability, interfacing with businesses, the government, academia and the non-profit community. I have experienced first-hand the tangible results that can be achieved by motivated people who collaborate and have a desire to move things forward. Now more than ever, is an exciting time to advance sustainability by using a systems-thinking approach, by benefiting from appropriate technological advances and by sharing lessons learned around best-in-class strategies, policies and projects. Sustainable San Mateo County has been promoting sustainability for more than 25 years and the organization's positive and measurable impact on the lives of people that work, live and play in San Mateo County has been extremely valuable!

As we embark together on the next phase for SSMC, I welcome your ideas and input on ways we can make our county a true role model for sustainability throughout the region and beyond! I encourage all of you to reach out and contact us to learn more about our organization and ways you can become actively involved in one of our many committees. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining our vibrant community. Thank you!
What better way to close than with the wise words of Jane Goodall: "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." With this in mind, we encourage you to engage in helping us make Earth Day every day!
Yours truly,
Christine
