The winter holidays are a wonderful time for friends, family, and neighbors to come together and celebrate. They're also a time when fire departments nationwide see a significant increase in preventable home fires. As you put the finishing touches on your celebrations, please consider the following safety tips.

-Merry and bright: Carefully inspect holiday lights each year and throw away any with frayed cords, loose connections, or cracked lamp holders. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Blow out candles and turn off all light strings when you leave the room or go to bed.

-Keep it fresh: Keep trees fresh by watering daily. Dry trees are a serious fire hazard. Ensure trees are away from open candles.

-Sound the alarm: It is a great time to test your smoke alarms to make sure they work. Be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home if you haven't already.

-Neighbors helping neighbors: Nextdoor allows you to list Emergency Contacts on your profile, providing neighbors with another way to help out in case a safety concern arises. Go to your profile and select Add Emergency Contacts.

-Stay warm: If you use a space heater, place it on a hard, level, non flammable surface. Do not place it on rugs, carpets, or near bedding. Ensure ember in the fireplace is extinguished before going to bed or leaving your home. Remember, burn seasoned wood only - no wrapping paper.
