It's Beautification Awards Time

FEATURED ITEM:  Eighteenth Annual Beautification Awards are coming up!
It is time to start looking around the City of San Bruno for residents, commercial buildings and group projects that deserve recognition for their curb appeal, landscaping improvements or their low water use and/or drought resistant landscaping. The Beautification Task Force will be reviewing the applications.

Awards will be presented at the October 14 Council meeting. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, August 29. Click for the application form.

FUTURE EVENT: - Centennial Tree Project – Free Street Trees

The City of San Bruno, as part of the year-long Centennial celebration, is trying to plant 100 new Street Trees with the help of residents.  The trees will be provided to you free and maintained by the City of San Bruno.  You will be notified of the date of planting.  You will be given a Centennial Certificate stating your participation in the project and which number of the 100 trees is yours.  Limit one tree per house and tree location must not interfere with underground utilities.

FUTURE EVENT:  Tuesday August 5th - Free Compost Workshops

Learn how to turn your kitchen food scraps and yard trimmings into a rich soil amendment that will help your garden thrive.  Compost Workshops are held at the San Bruno Recreation Center in San Bruno City Park.

Workshops are free. Reservations are not necessary but encouraged so there is a way to contact participants in case a class is cancelled. Beginning the week of January 6th 2014, please put your green cart out weekly with your blue and grey cart.

Don't send your food scraps and landscape material to the landfill; compost them instead! Other than being the environmentally friendly thing to do, most residents who participate in the compost collection program see a significant decrease in their garbage. So put your food scraps and food and beverage containers in the Compost cart instead of the Garbage cart, and help us all achieve Waste Zero!

Composting is a highly effective way to help protect the environment, and Recology San Mateo County is proud to offer a home composting collection service to its customers.

More than six million tons of food products are dumped in California every year. Food is the largest single source of waste in California, making up 15.5 percent of the waste stream.

That waste decomposes and creates methane gas, which is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide and is directly attributed to climate change. Composting is nature's way of recycling organic waste into a new soil amendment rich in nutrients that can be used for organic farming, vineyards     and highway erosion and control projects.

On December 23, 2014 the City of San Bruno will celebrate its first 100 years of incorporation and Centennial. The Centennial is an opportunity not only to recognize the community’s history, but also to celebrate the community’s identity, its accomplishments, and its future opportunities and potential. The City Council has begun the process to develop the scope of the celebration as well as the process for engagement with residents, businesses and community stakeholders.

The City of San Bruno, on their web page, writes:  “This past fall and winter has been one of the driest years on record across the state of California. At the State level, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency and has asked California residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%. 

“At the local level, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has issued a statement today requesting a voluntary 10% reduction on the SF Regional Water System in response to the dry weather conditions and to ensure that available water supplies are prudently managed.

“In coordination with this local advisory, the City of San Bruno is asking residents and businesses to conserve water to help meet the 10% voluntary reduction goal that will help preserve Hetch Hetchy’s and our own groundwater’s valuable resources.

“The SFPUC is closely monitoring water levels in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and snow pack data. Within the next 90 days, the SFPUC will have survey data from snow pack depths and reservoir resource levels throughout the SF Regional Water Supply to share with other water agencies. The data results will allow water agencies to develop their specific water supply strategies for the future. Residents of San Bruno are requested to follow water conservation practices at all times. The City will update residents on any changes made to the request of a 10% voluntary reduction when new information is available.

These enduring and tax-deductible gifts serve both as a personal commemoration and as a way to enhance the community’s enjoyment of City parks.

Personal Tribute Plaques

In tribute and remembrance, a loved one may be honored with a 3”x 3”commemorative bronze plaque on the San Bruno Recognition Sculpture in City Park. Plaques are inscribed with the honoree’s first and last name, the date of the recognition and with either “In Honor of” or “In Memory of.” The Personal Tribute commemorative bronze plaque donation is $400. Plaques may be ordered using the link to the form below.

Park Amenity Tributes

Personal tributes may also be given through a donation for a specific park amenity (tree, bench, water fountain, picnic table, etc.) Staff from the Community Services Department is available to assist donors in the selection of a park amenity. Please fill out the form at the link below and check the box indicating your wish to donate an amenity and staff will contact you to discuss the Department's current needs. The donation fee associated with the park amenity varies.

In a letter dated May 23rd 2014 Mr. Sammut writes about Ordinance 1284:

To the Honorable Mayor, Vice-Mayor, and Members of the City Council:

As you know, I am a strong supporter of revitalizing our decaying downtown area.  Since the city has scheduled a public “Study Session” on the San Bruno Transit Corridors Plan (TCP) next Thursday, May 29, I thought this might be an opportune moment to share my thoughts with you.

I’m sure you agree that we have a rare opportunity to put our city back on the track to prosperity.  The businesses that have opened new offices here – including Google, YouTube, Walmart.Com, Stella and Dot, and Responsys – employ thousands of well-paid staff and executives.  Many of them are potential local apartment dwellers, home buyers, customers, and consumers.  But we need to provide them with good local options for places to live, dine, and shop.  Otherwise, they’ll look elsewhere.

I support what you are planning to do, but I am concerned that the plan as it now stands may not provide adequate parking and may not be raising the downtown building height limit enough.

In my opinion, parking is the main issue.  Many planners have been trained to encourage so-called “transit villages,” where residential and commercial complexes are built near mass transit lines and are thus deemed capable of doing without adequate parking for private cars.  I fear that the San Bruno plan leans in this direction, and I urge you to consider carefully whether the “transit village” approach will really work.  Or will it drive away – no pun intended – potential apartment and home buyers and renters who do not want to forego the convenience and safety of having their own cars?  Will the lack of adequate parking lead to traffic jams and parking-place frenzy on the part of those who choose to keep their automobiles?

If you study what has happened in other cities that have tried to limit parking facilities for new buildings, I think you will find that it has hurt them.  Please be sure that the San Bruno TCP provides for sufficient parking.

The other key issue is increasing the building height limit sufficiently to make the downtown area appealing to investors.  This strategy has served other cities well, and it can work here in San Bruno.  But the document you sent out announcing the upcoming Study Session seems to show more concern about political backlash against taller buildings than about the adequacy of the proposed increases.

I am afraid that the proposed height limits risk falling between two stools: insufficient to attract investors but enough to stir up political opposition anyway.  My opinion is that no matter what you propose, you will always have to deal with NIMBY’s (“Not in my backyard”), so you might as well be sure that you are advocating a height limit sufficient to attract investors.

On Tuesday May 20th 2014 Citi Bank on San Mateo Avenue and Jenevein officially adopted the tree containers bordering their property.  The Beautification Task Force was present for the official recognition and the containers will show “Adopted by Citi Bank”.

The City only planted 1 planter but they will be adopting all three down the road.

The Beautification Task Force of the City of San Bruno promotes the quality of life in San Bruno by creating, supporting and participating in activities and programs that improve the physical and aesthetic environment of our community. We accomplish this by:

-Advocating a high standard of community responsibility, cleanliness, maintenance and attractiveness for our developed and natural environment;

About the Beautification Task Force

The Beautification Task Force supports and advocates a public arts policy, tree ordinances, and other Council policies that encourage the beautification of the City. The Task Force also organizes several City-wide events including Operation Clean Sweep ( held the first Saturday in May each year) and the Beautification Awards. They also serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council. For information on upcoming events call the Beautification Task Force at 650-616-7145. 

One of the programs the Beautification Task Force is working on alongside the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce is the Adopt – A – Planter program. The goal is to get businesses along San Mateo Avenue to adopt the tree planter in-front of or near their business.  The City will plant appropriate vegetation and make sure the planters are connected to a watering system.  All the business needs to commit to is removing paper etc. that may collect in the planter.

Join the Beautification Task Force. You can make a difference.
