Dear San Bruno Park School District Families,

As you may be aware, Women's March organizers are planning a student walk out for March 14th to protest gun violence. As it is our common interest to ensure student safety, I know many of you join me in support of efforts to organize and peacefully protest, rather than have our students leave campuses without permission. In light of this, it is important that we be sensitive to the rights of all of our students to be involved with voicing their concerns. No matter what your personal perspective may be, we as a school district must be united in our commitment to value each and every student we serve, and to uphold a culture of safety and respect for our diverse community. During our regular scheduled board meeting on March 14th, our School Board will be discussing and approving a resolution for Safety.

I would like to share with you a summary of three national protests being planned across the country in response to the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Please note that these protests do not represent all of the events that may be scheduled in our community and/or across our nation.

March 14th - Enough: National School Walkout. Organizers are encouraging teachers, students, administrators, and others to walk out of class for 17 minutes (one minute for each life we lost at the school) beginning at 10:00 a.m.

March 24th - March for Our Lives protest in Washington DC and other cities, including San Francisco and San Jose. Additional protests might be held in San Mateo County. Organized by students from Parkland, Florida, "March for Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar."

April 20th - National High School Walk-Out for Anti-Gun Violence. Student-organized walkout commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Columbine campus shooting. Some organizers are calling for students to stay out of school until "their demands are met" (i.e. gun laws are changed). I have learned that many High Schools in our feeder district are planning a Student Walk - In (planned activities within the school setting/environment).

For Middle School Parents

In advance of March 14h, school administrators will meet with student leaders to discuss how we as a community want to remember the students and staff members who lost their lives in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. While we expect students to remain on campus that day, we will redesign scheduled teaching at 10:00 am for this special event to aid in facilitating student - led set of activities and/or events. Depending on weather. . . Good Weather: Students will assembly on the blacktop at 10. Seventeen orange balloons will be released to honor the shooting victim.

If it is raining: ASB president will make an announcement on the PA system, name all victims and have a seventeen second moment of silence.

Students are encouraged to wear orange shirts or orange sweatshirts for the day, which will be allowed

For Elementary School Parents

I wanted to share this information with you to keep you informed of what may be happening in the community, but also to assure that we will not be discussing these events as part of the school day. Teachers may choose to take some time on March 14"' for reflection; the following resource link Click here will be provided to all teachers regarding this topic as well as various age-appropriate educational activities.

For all

These national events were designed to give students, teachers, and others the chance to express their frustration with the senseless gun violence that has already plagued many schools and to take action to bring about change. We support our students' desire to make a positive difference in the world, but we also want to make sure they are safe. As such, we will do what we can to give them opportunities on campus to talk and learn about these issues and explore ways in which they can make a difference.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office. Sincerely,

Stella M. Kemp, Ed.D. Superintendent
