More than one thousand people gathered at the annual Memorial Day observance at San Bruno’s Golden Gate National Cemetery enjoying wonderful band music, inspirational speeches, and most importantly honoring those service folks who fought and died for our country as well as veterans and current service military personnel.
Cemetery Superintendent Kathy McCall warmly greeted those in attendance and acknowledged all those who planned this impressive program and expressed appreciation for all the volunteers who decorated the grave markers with American flags numbering in excess of 113,000.

Activities began with long time Master of Ceremonies Peter Cleaveland announcing a “Fly-over” by a Coast Guard helicopter followed by the presentation of colors by the U.S. Coast Guard color bearers and bag piper Lynne Miller.
Inspirational speeches were given by Madge Fordyce, age 95, telling her experiences as a member of the “Rosie the Riveter” women’s war-time workers. A standing ovation was spontaneous following her presentation.

The next speaker was Admiral John M. Richardson, highest ranking naval officer who spoke about the Naval Academy graduates to whom he spoke and inducted earlier in the week and focusing on three prominent heroes buried here in the cemetery: Admiral Nimitz, Admiral Spruance, and Admiral Lockwood.
