Moving San Mateo County Forward: Housing, Transit at Crossroads

Trying to solve the San Mateo County CA housing needs

HLC’s Latest Report: Moving San Mateo County Forward: Housing and Transit at a Crossroads

Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo and TransForm, a transportation advocacy group, published a report that recommends solutions to tackle traffic and affordable housing together. From 2010 to 2015, San Mateo County added 72,800 new jobs, but just 3,844 homes: for each new home, that’s 19 jobs. The report also finds that half of San Mateo County’s workers make less than $50,000 per year, and most local homes are priced far out of reach for most local workers. “We can’t keep planning for transportation in a vacuum. We need to build housing in ways that reduce the need to drive in the first place,” said Chris Lepe, Senior Community Planner at TransForm. “We can help people get out of their cars by providing real alternatives that are reliable, safe, and pleasant,” Lepe said. ”The transportation sales tax is exactly the tool we need to invest in effective public transit, sidewalks, and bike lanes.” While everyone feels the effects of the shortage, low-income renters and buyers are hit hardest. “Even in Silicon Valley, most jobs are not high-paying tech jobs,” said Stivers. “Many people work in retail and restaurants or care for seniors and children. The people with the fewest resources and the least flexible jobs are being forced into the worst commutes.”

Monday night is a big night for housing!

Menlo Park - We’ll be at the Planning Commission to support more housing at all income levels throughout Menlo Park.

Support Affordable Housing in the City of San Mateo

Also on Monday night (June 18 2018), the San Mateo City Council will consider an update to their inclusionary housing policy. Right now, the inclusionary policy prohibits land dedication and other partnerships with affordable housing developers that can create more affordable homes at deep levels of affordability. Changing the inclusionary policy requires a vote of the people because the original inclusionary policy was prescripted in Measure H, the height limit.

Join us in urging the council to support a new Inclusionary Policy that will allow more homes at a deeper level of affordability.
