San Bruno Park School District is one step further along in its efforts to restore fiscal recovery to the District and implement a new vision for 21st Century teaching and learning -Schools with Tomorrow Inside - which begins with school consolidation to right size the District.

The Board of Trustees voted last evening to adopt the recommendations of the District’s Facilities Surplus 7-11 Committee to consolidate El Crystal Elementary School at the end of this school year and Rollingwood Elementary School in the next few years. The Board also voted to declare those sites surplus property leaving the door open for future discussion of selling property to allow for extensive new construction and modernization of what will become, over time, four elementary and one middle school serving San Bruno students now and well into the future.

A number of community leaders including Supervisor Dave Pine and former Mayor Jim Ruane addressed the Board in support of the vision to bring District school into the 21st Century. The cost savings from consolidation that will be realized from reduction in overhead, operations, maintenance and repair of old and under enrolled schools will help restore the District’s reserves while paving the way for creating modern teaching and learning centers to prepare San Bruno children for a global economy.

“When you think about it, San Bruno Park School District is positioned as a gateway to the world”, commented Superintendent Dr. Stella Kemp referring to the vision for Schools with Tomorrow Inside last September. “The District is flanked on one side by YouTube headquarters and, on the other side, by state-of-the-art Capuchino High School. Our schools look east to an international airport and major transportation stations, and west to the dynamic Skyline College and an ocean that connects continents”, she continued, “yet the District Schools, which are 52-76 years old, are out of sync with the gateway and 21st Century learning. The recommendations of the 7-11 Committee and the Board’s actions will allow us to begin the planning for the transformation of the schools to provide the children of San Bruno a much better opportunity for successfully accessing the gateway to success in a global economy”, Dr. Kemp concluded.

The next step is for the District to finalize the consolidation plan which includes reassigning students at El Crystal, a plan that paves the way for a smooth transition for these students into their new home schools. At the same time, facilities visioning has been ongoing that has engaged members of the school district and community-at-large in conversation about what San Bruno schools should look like and what their functionality should be to provide teachers and students with the best environment for instruction and learning now and in the future.
