OnGoing Phone Scam - What YOU Need To Know

In an effort to remind everyone of the ongoing issue with phone scams, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office provides the following tips to avoid becoming a victim.

- If there is a warrant for your arrest, law enforcement will have all of that information already.

- Do not provide any personal information over the phone (ie; names, birthdates, ages, etc.).

- San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office never accepts payment over the phone.

- San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office only accepts payments in person.

- We do not accept green dot cards, gift cards, money wires, or similar untraceable forms of payment.

- We do not contact people over the phone about their warrants.

- If someone is eligible for release from jail you have to pay the entire amount of the bail in person or go through a bail bonds agency (that you select, they won’t call you unexpectedly).

- Even if the scammer uses the actual name and rank of a Sheriff’s Office employee, it does not mean they are conducting legitimate business. The name and ranks of Sheriff’s Office employees is public information.

Should you have any questions or concerns, call your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging everyone to be alert and skeptical about any phone calls they receive where the caller is asking for money of any kind.
