Paroled Bank Robber Accused Of Robbing San Bruno Bank

He is charged with robbing banks in San Francisco, San Bruno, and Berkeley, and an attempted robbery in Walnut Creek.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA —A convicted San Francisco bank robber is accused of a spate of new bank robberies around the Bay Area and was indicted Tuesday by federal prosecutors.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Timothy Wayne Phillips, 51, robbed three banks between Aug. 29 and Sept. 7, stealing more than $7,000 in a little more than a week's time. He also tried to rob a fourth bank but didn't
succeed.

Federal court records show Phillips was on parole when he committed the robberies.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of bank robbery in 2007 and was still under supervised release when prosecutors say he started targeting banks again in recent months.

The alleged crime spree started Aug. 29 when Phillips made off with $5,449.90 from a U.S. Bank branch in San Bruno, prosecutors said.

A week later on Sept. 6, he took $479 from a Wells Fargo branch in San Francisco's Financial District, court records show.

The next day, Sept. 7, he headed to Walnut Creek, where he tried to rob City National Bank but didn't succeed.

The indictment didn't provide more details about the attempted robbery.

Prosecutors say Phillips then robbed a Wells Fargo branch in Berkeley that same day, escaping with $1,407.

Prosecutors did not say when Phillips was arrested. He has his first appearance in federal court on Thursday.
