Chapman was born in Montana where he became involved with art at an early age. For 25 years, however, he laid aside this interest. For the last 20, he rode as a professional thoroughbred jockey in the Bay Area. Chapman competed in over 20,000 races and won more than 2,500 times. Toward the end of his jockey days he took up painting again.

Over the last 21 years, Chapman has painted in oils. His artwork hangs in collections across the nation. He specializes in horses, pets and wildlife subjects. Chapman currently teaches weekly classes in oil and acrylic painting at University Art in Redwood City.
