Riechel informs: US Congresswoman Jackie Speier on Memorial Day

What Memorial Day Means to US Congresswoman Jackie Speier

US Congresswoman jackie Speier shares:

Dear Friends,

As we prepare to commemorate the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, I wanted to take a moment to share with you what Memorial Day means to me.

Just last week at the unveiling of the Hillsborough Veterans Memorial, I met the family of a decorated Marine from my Congressional District who died seven months ago when his plane crashed over the English countryside. Major Taj Sareen from Hillsborough was returning from his third deployment in the Middle East. His final act of heroism was to steer his disabled jet away from homes to spare the lives of many others. Major Sareen leaves behind his family and friends who grieve his loss while taking pride in his courage and valor. His father KB Sareen, his mother Shashi Sareen and his sister Tanya Sareen said to me that even in their grief they are grateful to live in a country where we are free to dream and become whatever we want. Their son died protecting the privileges we all have.

Memorial Day is a time to remember the honor, valor, and sacrifice made by the 1.2 million American military service members who have died for our freedoms; military service members like Major Sareen. As the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee, and as a mother and spouse, I share in the collective grief for these lost lives. I’m deeply committed to support the families of military service members who have died in defense of our nation. I also vow to continue to fight for the well-being of our active duty military personnel and veterans, so that they have access to education, employment, health care, and all the other benefits they deserve.

How each of us views our nation’s past wars and conflicts is unique. How each of us chooses to commemorate our fallen military service members on this holiday may differ. But one thing that we all share is the freedom we enjoy in the world’s greatest democracy, and we must never forget the sacrifices, or the people, that make this freedom possible.

All the best,

/s/ Jackie
