Sacramento – Today, the CPUC imposed a $1.6 billion penalty on PG&E for unsafe operation of its gas transmission system. Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin (D-San Mateo) released the following statement in response:

“I am pleased to see the California Public Utilities Commission reach a decision today on the fine to be imposed on Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the amount of $1.6 billion for unsafe operation of its gas transmission system which specifically includes the pipeline rupture in San Bruno in 2010,” stated Assemblymember Kevin Mullin.

“This fine, recommended by new CPUC President, Michael Picker and $200 million over what was originally proposed by Administrative Law Judges, is hopefully a sign that business as we have known it at the CPUC has changed. While no amount of money will change the tragic events of 2010, this fine is a step toward closure for the San Bruno community and also a step forward in increasing the safety of the system overall.”
