Salmonella Scare: If You Have This Almond or Peanut Butter at Home, Toss It!

nSpired Natural Foods is recalling several nut butter products that once lined the shelves of major retailers like Kroger, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s due to potential salmonella contamination.

According to an FDA press release, the 43 peanut and almond butter products were voluntarily recalled by nSpired after the FDA alerted the company to the potential contamination during routine testing.

Brand names involved in the recall include Arrowhead Mills and Maranatha. Other private label nut butters are also being recalled due to salmonella fears. The full list of recalled products can be found on the FDA’s website.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. If the illness is not treated, it can infect arteries. People most at risk from salmonella infections are the elderly, young children, and people with compromised immune systems. So far, four illnesses that may be associated with consuming these products have been reported.
