OCTOBER 15, 2015—SAN BRUNO, CA.—On October 15, bestselling and award winning author Dav Pilkey spent several hours with students at San Bruno Park School District’s Allen Elementary School. Creator of the popular Captain Underpants and Dumb Bunnies series; The Paperboy, a Caldecott Honor Book; and Dog Breath, winner of the California Young Reader Medal, Dav Pilkey shared with students how reading and writing changed his life and how it can change theirs, too. Through an interactive assembly setting, complete with Mr. Pilkey sketching his characters live for the students, he captivated their attention and drew them into the art of story-telling and the pleasure that reading can bring.

As a young boy, Pilkey was often reprimanded for misbehaving in class. It was in those moments of sitting in the hallway that he created the Captain Underpants characters and discovered the joy of books. His submission to a national student writing competition won him recognition at an early age for his creative talent. His animated presentation was complemented by drawings he shared with the students capturing his struggles in school growing up.

Pilkey’s visit was in partnership with Scholastic Inc., the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, who published the first volume of the Captain Underpants series in 1997. The bestselling series has more than 70 million copies in print to date. Since 2010, Scholastic Inc. has published four more books from the author-illustrator.

Mr. Pilkey gave every Allen student an autographed copy of one of his books and treated each child to a book of their choice from the book fair. He also sketched several of his characters, giving the drawings to students and to the school, including an autographed copy of one of his books, translated in Braille, to a visually impaired student at Allen.
