San Bruno CA: Carol Bonner - YES On Measure "U"

San Bruno Patch will publish “NO on U” comments if received.

Measure “U”, if passed, would make the City Clerk’s position appointed rather than elected as it is now.

Current San Bruno City Clerk Carol Bonner provided the following:

Vote Yes on San Bruno’s Measure U

Yes, I indeed am in favor of the measure to have the City Clerk appointed.

I believe it is in the community’s best interest to have a City Clerk who is hired based on knowledge, skills, abilities, experience and education. I believe the position should be at a team level where they can stand their ground on a ruling or opinion if it is in the interest of maintaining integrity, transparency and the public’s trust.

The qualifications of being 18, a US citizen and resident of San Bruno are paltry compared to the responsibilities and training required to perform the responsibilities and do them well.

Elections should be for policy makers. The clerk position is administrative in nature and mostly directed by statute. Being the City Clerk should not be based on a popularity contest, rather a skill-set commensurate with the position.

The appointed City Clerk has more accountability and less chance of an issue which could hurt the city and embarrass the profession.
