Public Works - Maintenance Worker I/II

Maintenance Worker I: $51.660 - $63,396 Annually
Maintenance Worker II: $59,412- $72,912 Annually
The Position
The City of San Bruno is currently recruiting to fill one vacancy in the Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II classification. Candidates may be assigned to the Water, Wastewater, Street or Storm divisions. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and/or skilled tasks in maintenance work; operates equipment in construction; performs repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, wastewater, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems, and other duties as assigned.
The Department
The Public Services Department is comprised of the water, central garage, street & storm, wastewater, engineering and administration divisions. The Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II position will work at the Corporation Yard as part of the Maintenance and Operations Division. This division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City water, wastewater, street and storm infrastructure.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a self-starting, independent individual capable of working in a team-oriented environment. The Public Services Department is looking for a candidate that has a desire to learn a variety of maintenance tasks and has the interest in long-term professional development.
The successful candidate will have the ability to perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned; perform heavy manual tasks; work safely and adhere to established safety principles and practices; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; work effectively in the absence of close supervision; operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner; read and interpret basic maps and blueprints; understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- The Maintenance Worker I/II position requires graduation from high school or GED equivalent and/or any combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California drivers license and a Commercial Driver’s License certification (class B license) by completion of probationary period.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
Applicants should possess knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities including: hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions; traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations; purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment; standards relating to installation, location and required maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings; properties of backfill materials, construction materials, concrete, asphalt, hot patch, cold patch, oils, paints, and a variety of other materials used in maintenance work; equipment, methods, and materials used in the installation, repair, maintenance, and cleaning of wastewater and water mains, lines and related facilities; pipefitting and cement work; preparation and operation of spray painting equipment; methods of fabricating and installing street signs.
Applicants should possess skill in operation of motorized vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, pick up trucks, utility trucks, back hoes, street sweepers, sewer flushers, tampers, plate compactors, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radios, phone.
