“The District’s mission to ‘educate and empower all students to thrive academically, socially and emotionally and be contributing members of society’, recognizes that student wellness goes hand in hand with good attendance as critical components to student learning and success”, commented Dr. Stella Kemp, Superintendent. “It is imperative for the District to be in tune with the mental and physical health of students, to support them in living out the intent of the District’s mission”, she continued.

The Kent Award is given to outstanding and innovative programs either in the classroom or outside the classroom as well as district-wide programs. Applicants must demonstrate their programs promote student success, employ a high degree of creativity, and demonstrate transferability. Named after past San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, J. Russell Kent, SMCSBA initiated the program in the 1980-81 school year.

Historically, the Student Health Center, located on the District’s Belle Air Elementary School campus, receives grant funding from Peninsula Health Care District, currently totaling over one million dollars which provided for the initial establishment of the modular center. Contributing to the variety of services and programs over the years are San Bruno Lions Club (free vision screening), Healthier Kids Foundation (free dental and hearing screening), American Heart Association and Leah’s Pantry (providing workshops for students and parents on shopping, cooking and eating healthy), the latter hosted through the San Bruno Library. Marie Lukehart is the District’s Health and Wellness Coordinator.

The District will be presented with the recognition in May at the annual SMCSBA Kent Awards dinner.
