Fireworks, BBQ, Traffic and Other Reminders From San Mateo Sheriff's Office

From the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Cities, Towns and Unincorporated areas served by the Sheriff’s Office:    
    
• ZERO TOLERANCE ON FIREWORKS - In the cities, towns and unincorporated areas served by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, it is illegal to possess, store, offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail, use, or explode any fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks. The intent of the law is to prevent injury, maintain order in our neighborhoods, prevent fire or damage to structures and/or vegetation. Patrols by our Sheriff’s Deputies and Partner Fire Departments will be patrolling the area “on the lookout” for fireworks. This is a zero-tolerance issue - violators will be cited.    
    
• TRAFFIC - This is a heavy travel time throughout The County – expect heavy traffic and parking congestion.  Plan your travel accordingly.  All law enforcement agencies including the Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and City Police Departments across the state will be conducting maximum enforcement efforts on drunk driving.  Don’t drink and drive!    
    
• BARBEQUE AND PICNIC SAFETY – Use care when cooking especially outside cooking during dry, hot or windy conditions.  Hot embers from a barbecue can easily start a fire.  Never bring a barbeque inside a building; carbon-monoxide is extremely dangerous, odorless, colorless gas given off by the burning of charcoal that can kill.  Beware of leaving foods that should be refrigerated out where they can become too warm.  Keep refrigerated foods on ice or in a cooler to prevent spoiling.    
    
• WATER SAFETY – Water activities are always popular on summer weekends and during times of hot weather.  If boating, make sure that you have all of the safety equipment required by the United States Coast Guard.  A USCG approved life jacket of the correct size is required for every occupant of a boat.  Always supervise children playing in water.  At beaches beware of waves that can change unexpectedly.  Remember that just a few inches of rapidly flowing water can easily knock a person off their feet.
