Senator Hill Issues Statement on Results of Cal Fire’s First Completed Wildfire Investigations
“The results Cal Fire released today show that the narratives about a ‘new normal’ are a ruse,” said state Senator Jerry Hill. “What the investigation found is clearly the old normal. In three cases, there was vegetation that investigators deemed too close to PG&E power lines: trees that should have been maintained but were not. And then the trees or a branch of a tree came in contact with the power lines, resulting in three of the four fires investigated. There is nothing new about that and nothing related to a new normal.
“The findings made public today also show procedures are being properly followed, with the investigations referred to prosecutors for review. That provides due process to the residents of those fire damaged communities andto PG&E.
“If PG&E is ultimately found to be negligent or didn’t properly maintain vegetation or its infrastructure, then PG&E should pay. But we need to allow the process to play out. This is why we shouldn’t be rushing special interest reforms through the Legislature that seek to limit utility liability or shift cost burdens from utilities to consumers.”
