Everyone should learn CPR

Dear friends,

Find out what's happening in San Brunofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Heart attacks are not something that most teens worry about but they may strike any family at any time. That’s why I co-sponsored an all-day CPR training event for freshman at Westmoor High School last month in partnership with American Medical Response. About 200 students learned CPR that day and other critical life-saving techniques such as the Heimlich maneuver.

Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home, according to the American Heart Association. The numbers are staggering as more than 500,000 people a year suffer cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, about 80 percent of those people end up dying. But not everyone has to die as proved by stories from within our community.

It reminds me of a 56-year-old Burlingame man who suffered a life-threatening heart attack while at home one evening about two years ago. Jim Sobel’s daughter immediately applied CPR to her father and he survived. She had only learned CPR about three weeks before her father suffered the heart attack. So inspired by his daughter’s actions, the Sobels started conducting CPR trainings at schools in Burlingame.

These trainings should be conducted at every school because CPR is a skill everyone should have because it can save lives.

I’d like thank Brad White, the regional director of American Medical Response (AMR) and Denise Shreve, the health curriculum lead for the Jefferson Union High School District who helped coordinate this incredible event. A special thanks to all the AMR first responders who helped conduct the training and of course the Westmoor students who were eager to learn these new skills. Earth Day is Every Day

I was delighted to emcee the Pacifica Beach Coalition’s Earth Day/EcoFest at Linda Mar State Beach April 21. It was a really fun day but an educational one as well. I was especially honored to join Supervisor Don Horsley on stage, whose early career in law enforcement included Pacifica before he ultimately became sheriff of San Mateo County. Some might know that I too spent my early childhood growing up in Pacifica, perhaps one of the cleanest cities on all of the California coast thanks to the coalition’s volunteers and Lynn Adams, PBC’s president.

Kudos to Greg Cochran of the Pedro Point Surf Club, Pacifica Mayor John Keener and keynote speaker Rob Cala, San Mateo County park ranger for participating in the festivities. Cala gave a presentation on Sea Stars, which are prevalent on our coastal beaches, particularly at Rockaway Beach going north toward Mussel Rock. Sea Stars are a species of invertebrates that can regenerate itself. Very fascinating creatures.

We also honored the PCB’s Earth Heroes. This year’s honorees were Boy Scout Troop 74 leader John Haynes, Westborough Middle School teacher Danny Yanow, PBC’s Mandy Hall, Pacifica School District Superintendent Wendy Tukloff and Freidel Cohen, who leads restoration work at the Rockaway switchbacks. Join our Emergency Preparedness Fair

Join me, Sheriff Carlos Bolanos and the Office of Emergency Services (OES) Monday, April 30 at Skyline College for an Emergency Preparedness Fair, the first ever to be conducted in north San Mateo County.

You will learn how the county prepares for earthquakes, fires, disaster recovery and active shooter scenarios. Experts from the county’s Cliff Rescue Unit, Dive Team, Marine Unit and Bomb Squad will be on hand to discuss their day-to-day workload and how they work collaboratively with first responders in the region to be ready for an emergency the county might face.

As chair of the Emergency Services Council, which is a joint powers authority comprised of the 20 cities in the county and the Homeland Security Division of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Our OES personnel were instrumental in assisting first responders during the devastating fires in Napa County in December, which has put a greater emphasis on the need to have a coordinated response during such emergencies.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP with Mike Richardson at mrichardson@smcgov.org or at (650) 363-4247.

Thanks for Taking our Hand Luncheon

The North Peninsula Food Pantry and Dining Center of Daly City will host the 16th Annual Thanks for Taking our Hand Luncheon, Wednesday, May 16 at noon at the Colma Community Center, 1520 Hillside Blvd., Colma. The pantry provides a three days’ supply of non-perishable food for those in need and the dining center serves hot meals to anyone who is hungry three nights a week. For additional information, call (650) 994-5150 or email fooddc@comcast.net. Click here or on the image to learn more.

Join me for office hours in San Bruno

I am conducting office hours in District 5 at various locations in north San Mateo County. We are doing this to make it easier to have face-to-face conversations with constituents who may not be easily capable of visiting our office at the County Center in Redwood City. Our next office hours will be held at Starbucks, 851 Cherry Ave., Bayhill Shopping Center, San Bruno, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 16.

Look for future office hours to be held in Colma, South San Francisco, Broadmoor Village and of course Daly City. I look forward to hearing your concerns and updating you on the actions taken by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to keep our communities safe and healthy.

In friendship,

/s/ David J. Canepa
