Things to Know: City Pool Ready to Open; Sign Up For Summer Reading Club

Here are some important things happening around town that everyone should know about this upcoming week.

Saturday, June 9-July 31.  Registration for the library's summer reading club begins on June 9. This year's theme is "Dream Big." The kick-off event will be on Wednesday, June 20. For more information, visit the city's website.

Sunday, June 10. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The San Bruno Chamber of Commerce will hold its farmers' market at its new location in the parking lot of The Shops at Tanforan, just north of the El Camino Real entrance. The market will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sundays.

Monday, June 11. The San Bruno Park Pool opens. Swim lessons, water aerobics, lap swimming, recreation swimming and private pool rentals are all offered. There is something for everyone.

Monday, June 11. Caltrain will begin preparatory work at the intersection of First and Pine avenues before closing First Avenue on June 17 as part of the grade separation project that is currently underway.  

Tuesday, June 12. 11:45 a.m. Join city staff for Big Truck Storytime in City Park with the Parks Department’s big trucks and their drivers. Next to the playground.

Tuesday, June 12. Join and attend the S.O.S. (Save Our Schools) committee meeting, which will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. every Tuesday night during the summer at the Veteran's Memorial Building in the community room. Wednesday, June 13. 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Learn how to download free OverDrive eBooks to your computer, eBook reader, iPhone or iPad at a hands-on drop-in clinic at the library. You will learn the basics of checking out at OverDrive eBook and transferring it to your device. No reservations necessary for this free workshop. A list of all OverDrive compatable devices is available at overdrive.com.

Thursday, June 14. The California Highway Patrol will hold another "Older Driver Traffic Safety" seminar in Belmont. A flier is attached with more information.

Upcoming Events So You Can Plan Accordingly

Friday, June 15.  Assemblyman Jerry Hill and state Controller John Chiang invite restaurant owners and those in the hospitality industry to a free seminar from 2 to 4 p.m. at the College of San Mateo, College Center, Building 10, Room 195, 1700 West Hillsdale Blvd., in San Mateo.  Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 650-349-1900.

Monday, June 18-July 20. Summer at Serra, which offers co-ed academics for the summer, will take place.  A flier with more information is attached.

Tuesday, June 19. The San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District will be convening a public scoping meeting to receive agency and public comment on the scope of analysis and PEIR content for the proposed Program in the County of San Mateo, California. The meeting will take place from 5:30pm-7:30 p.m. at the library. For more information, call 650-344-8592.

1. The San Bruno Citizens Crime Prevention Committee is pleased to attach its School’s Out Safety Tip as well as information about How To Prevent Drowning now that the city pool is opening.

In Case You Missed This

The city’s Citizens Crime Prevention Committee, which meets on the second Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m. in City Hall, Room 113, and the Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Committee together manned an information table during the Posy Parade. They talked to visitors and handed out bike safety info (some attached) and brochures about How To Start A Neighborhood Watch Block and Reporting Suspicious Persons (attached).  The Bicycle Committee next meets Wednesday from 6:15 to 9 p.m at City Hall in Conference Room 101. Assemblyman Jerry Hill, Mayor Jim Ruane and Councilman Michael Salazar stopped by our combined info table (photos attached).
