Under agenda item 7, staff will discuss a grant application to buy more rail cars for eight-car trains (instead of six-car). Eight-car trains must have 96 bike spaces to achieve the board's 2015 mandate for 8:1 seats-to-bikes.

We'll have "More Bikes, No Bumps" stickers to identify you as a supporter. Please let us know if you'd like to coordinate public comment with us. We had a good turnout at last month's board meeting about car layout, and even got the attention of the media. We need to show up again this month, because the grant application presentation expected last month got postponed to this month.

Suggested talking points:

  • Explain why bringing your bike on board is important to you and whether you have ever been bumped
  • Praise the board for its foresight in 2015 to mandate increased bike capacity on electrified trains at a ratio of 8:1 seats-to-bikes
  • Emphasize that eight-car electrified trains with 96 bike spaces per train will fully satisfy the board's 2015 directive
  • Explain that one more train per hour is no excuse to disregard the board's 2015 mandate; the board knew about the extra train per hour when they approved 8:1 seats-to-bikes
  • Encourage bike spaces to be distributed among all cars to allow (1) seats near bikes as a theft deterrent, (2) dedicated wheelchair space, (3) smoother boarding with all passengers able to board at all doors, (4) ease of operations with all rail cars having the same layout, and (5) scalability when new rail cars are added in the future
  • Include your city of residence after your name

Report all Bicycle Bumps
Please report all bicycle bumps using Caltrain’s bicycle bump report form, which automatically sends a tweet on Twitter. Reporting bumps is critical to show Caltrain that more bike space is needed now and on future electrified trains.

Caltrain Bicycle Advisory Committee Meeting March 15
Please consider attending the Caltrain BAC meeting at 5:45PM, Thursday, March 15 at 1250 San Carlos Ave, San Carlos. The BAC is working hard to improve bike access on Caltrain, but it's been tough. Caltrain staff have not been responsive to the BAC's concerns.

Please forward this email to other bike riders and anyone who cares about bicycle commuting. Thank you for your continued support!

More bikes, no bumps,
Shirley Johnson
