County of San Mateo to Hold “Topping Out” of Regional Operations Center
Ceremony marks construction milestone for new home to dispatchers, emergency services
Redwood City — The County of San Mateo will hold a “topping out” ceremony on Wednesday to mark a major construction milestone for its Regional Operations Center (ROC), a two-story, seismically safe facility which will be home to 9-1-1 public safety dispatchers, the Office of Emergency Services and secure data center.
The media is invited to watch the ceremony which celebrates the construction completed so far and thank the workers responsible for bringing it to fruition. A topping out ceremony is held when a structure’s final beam is secured into place. The work crews and other stakeholders will sign the beam and attach a small evergreen tree and American flag before hoisting it into place.
WHAT: Regional Operations Center (ROC) Topping Out Ceremony
WHEN: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 8:30 a.m.
WHERE: County Center Campus Redwood City, CA
(The ROC is across from the parking garage on the site of the former motor pool).
BACKGROUND: When completed in Spring 2019, the ROC will be 37,000 square feet with 354 columns sunk 40 feet into the ground for seismic support and the ability to continue operating around the clock during a catastrophe thanks to the help of two large generators. The facility will house public safety dispatchers, who are currently located in the Hall of Justice basement, and include space for County departments and partner agencies when the Emergency Operations Center is activated.
The ROC is the largest project funded to date by Measure K, the countywide half-cent sales tax approved by voters, and will achieve LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
