County of San Mateo Recognizes Tsunami Preparedness Week With Exercises, Response Plans
March 26-30 is Tsunami Preparedness Week. The San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services (OES) staff recently participated in an earthquake exercise at the Coastside Emergency Operations Center and discussed a response plan in the event of a tsunami. In conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, OES also takes part in the weekly test of the tsunami notification system and participates in the "Tsunami Safe Community" program, which includes maintaining multiple alert and warning systems including the SMC Alert and our eight coastside all-hazard rated sirens. OES urges San Mateo County residents to be prepared for tsunamis and other disasters. LEARN MORE

For World Tuberculosis Day Health System Promotes Testing for TB-Free California
As the global health community calls attention to tuberculosis (TB) on World TB Day on March 24, the San Mateo County Health System and other Bay Area health departments emphasize the need for testing and treatment to stop the spread of a disease that claimed 1.7 million lives worldwide in 2016. Tuberculosis is caused by germs that are spread from person to person through the air. San Mateo County reported 55 new cases in 2017 and 52 cases in 2016. LEARN MORE
San Mateo County Youth Commission Hosts Marijuana Education Campaign Town Hall Meeting
The San Mateo County Youth Commission's Health & Wellness Committee and San Mateo County Health System are hosting a town hall on March 31 to gather attitudes of youth and young people, ages 12-25, in San Mateo County toward marijuana and how they can most effectively plan a marijuana education campaign. Focus groups, a presentation on marijuana use, and a brief survey are all part of the agenda. Participants will be entered to win multiple raffles with a grand prize of a $100 Amazon gift card. San Mateo County Parks Department Reminds Visitors About Tide Pooling Etiquette
The Montara State Marine Protected Area (MPA) of the San Mateo County coast includes Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a special place of biological significance in Moss Beach that draws thousands of visitors throughout the year. San Mateo County Parks manages the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, popular with school and community groups for its educational value. Knowing the proper way to visit an MPA will help you plan your visit and do your part to protect and conserve marine life and associated habitats.
