County of San Mateo Launches First-of-its-Kind 'Smart Region' Innovation Center

In an effort to foster borderless technology innovation, the County of San Mateo opened SMC Labs, a “smart solutions” innovation center, at its main campus in Redwood City as a way to bring cities, agencies, residents, universities and businesses together with solutions providers, domain experts and resources to co-create innovative solutions for complex regional problems like housing, mobility and traffic. San Mateo County Parks Department Names New Assistant Parks Director

The Parks Department recently announced the appointment of Nicholas Calderon as Assistant Parks Director for the park system that welcomes 2.5 million visitors to its 22 parks each year. Next month, Calderon will transition from his current position as the County's Real Property Manager where he managed property services for county departments and other agencies. He was part of the team that worked with Peninsula Open Space Trust to acquire Tunitas Creek Beach among many other projects. Calderon was formerly a legislative aide to San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley, District 3. LEARN MORE

Office of Community Affairs Prepares to Participate in U.S. Census Survey 2020

The Office of Community Affairs (OCA) held its first working group meeting for cities participating in the Local Updating Census Address (LUCA) review process in preparation for the U.S. Census Survey 2020. This meeting educated the 18 participating cities about the importance of the LUCA process, identified the areas within the county considered hard to count or containing low response scores, explained the County’s canvassing strategy and solicited information regarding each city's planned canvassing process. OCA, in collaboration with the cities, is coordinating community canvassing efforts from late May through mid-June to identify non-transitional housing units such as converted garages or in-law units to ensure that every San Mateo County resident receives a Census survey in April 2020. County of San Mateo Honors Boards and Commissions Members at Recognition Ceremony

The County of San Mateo held a Boards & Commissions Appreciation Event May 22 to recognize the many volunteers willing to serve on one of the dozens of advisory boards and commissions, which help guide the Board of Supervisors and County departments in their efforts and outreach to specific populations. Thanks to these engaged citizens, the programs and services the County provides receive an extra level for review and benefit from the ideas and expertise the members bring to the table. Public Works Department Celebrates Public Works Week, Continues Projects Funded by SB 1 State Gas Tax

At its May 22 meeting the Board of Supervisors presented the County's Public Works Department a proclamation designating May 20-26 as Public Works Week, a time to recognize the hard work and great impact public works has on the quality of life in San Mateo County. From managing roads, facilities and utilities to engineering projects, resource protection, airports and more, the County's Public Works Department serves the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County, providing public services and operating facilities that benefit the community, including investing SB 1 funds to accelerate road repair and maintenance projects.
