City Council to Consider Aggressive Water Conservation Measures and Hear Plans for Hospital Closure

At this week's meeting, the council will vote on tough plans to save water, and Saddleback Memorial will give an update on closure plans.

At this week’s San Clemente City Council meeting, city leaders will hold a public hearing to consider aggressive action to reduce water usage.

Among the water conservation proposals on the table are:

  • Plans to limit the number of days per week that residents can water lawns
  • Tiered pricing
  • Pushing up the timetable requiring certain customers to convert to recycled water from three years to six months
  • Limiting the locations where new turf can be installed
  • Requiring large new developments to design landscapes with drought tolerant plants.

If the hospital closes, the nearest emergency room for many of the residents in those communities would be in Mission Viejo, according to the group Save San Clemente Hospital.

The hospital’s parent company MemorialCare plans to close the hospital and replace it with an outpatient medical center.

Tuesday’s council meeting is at San Clemente City Hall, 100 Avenida Presidio.
