Coastal Hazard Message for Orange County: Watch those Waves San Clemente

SAN CLEMENTE, CA—The National Weather Service released a coastal hazard message today for the period of Wednesday through Sunday. With high temperatures drawing many to the Orange County beaches, all are reminded to use good judgement when going in the ocean during that time.

"A long period south swell will bring elevated surf and dangerous rip currents to south and southwest facing beaches," the National Weather Service stated. "A southerly swell of 3- to 4-feet with a period of around 17 seconds is expected."

The south Pacific swell will build Wednesday, Aug. 17 and continue at least through Sunday Aug. 21 according to the NWS report.

"This will bring elevated surf, peaking around 6-feet on Friday and Saturday on southwest facing beaches," they reported. "Rip currents will be strong, with longshore currents occurring in some locations."

Beach Hazards have impacts that create hazardous swimming conditions, as rip currents may pull swimmers out to sea.

The following precautions were offered by the NWS:

• Watch for minor tidal overflow
• Obey posted warning signs and flags
• Always talk to a lifeguard before swimming
• Use caution when in or near the water
• Always swim near a lifeguard
