While prom is a customary event for students in traditional schools, for students at Capistrano Connections Academy, a local virtual public school, this month’s prom was only the school’s second in its nine-year history. Held at the Sleeping Beauty room of the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, May 11, the prom was attended by more than 80 students – more than twice the number of students that attended last year’s inaugural event, which hosted approximately 30 junior and seniors. Students enjoyed took photos with friends and participated in a dance-off to break the tie for prom king votes. Junior Evan Hofer of San Fernando Valley was elected prom king, and the honor of prom queen went to junior Samantha McCain of Santa Clarita. Next month, 136 students will graduate as members of the Capistrano Connections Academy class of 2013, the largest graduating class in the school’s history. Many of the school’s soon-to-be grads will attend colleges across the nation next fall, including University of California, San Diego, Baylor University and Humber College Institute of Technology for Advanced Learning. Capistrano Connections Academy is a tuition-free virtual public school serving students in grades K-12 throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
