CUSD 2014-15 Budget Restored the School Year to 180 days and Decreased Class Sizes by 1.5 Students Across All Grades- Teachers Have Yet to Agree!

Under the Old Contract the District had a 177 day school year and no reduction in class size.

On June 25th the Capistrano Unified Adopted a 2014-15 Budget that restored the school year to 180 days and decreased class sizes by 1.5 students across all grades.

  • The cost to the District to decrease class sizes as promised is $4.9 million.
  • The cost to the District to restore our school year to 180 days is $7.2 million

The September 10, 2014 Board Meeting Agenda Item #2 Resolution No. 1415-17, Preliminary 2013-2014 Financial Statements (unaudited actuals) it shows:

Revenues of $396,710,828

Expenses of $401,242,270

The District needs to find $4.5 million in additional revenue or $4.5 million in concessions from CUEA in order to balance its budget.

The District has not entered into a 2014-2015 contract with CUEA.

Unless the District finds $4.5 million in additional revenue or CUEA agrees to more concessions, the District does not have the money to pay for restoration of the school year to 180 days or to decrease class sizes as promised?

In e-mails dated August 31, 2014 and again on September 8, 2014 I asked the District for clarification on the following:

Has the District/CUEA filed an Impasse?

If the Employees continue to work under the 2013-14 contract, does that mean students should expect a 177 day school year and no reduction in class size?

There has been no response from the District.
