A Family Affair: Two Generations of Doctors Work Together to Care for South OC

Two generations of doctors have been treating those who live in San Clemente and surrounding areas for more than 40 years.

Somehow Elwyn Rexinger, MD, always knew he would become a doctor. But the family medicine specialist with Mission Heritage Medical Group never imagined he would spend more than half of his career working in the same practice alongside his son and extended family. For the Rexinger clan, caring for people’s health in south Orange County has been a family affair for decades. In fact, so many family members are on staff at the practice’s recently opened Talega office in San Clemente that patients call him Dr. Elwyn. Part of this is personal preference. The other is so he isn’t confused with his partner and son, Ken Rexinger, MD,an internal medicine physician and former chief of staff at Mission Hospital.

β€œOur entire practice is based on family, and that extends to our patients,” says Dr. Elwyn. β€œWe’ve had the privilege to care for multiple generations for more than 20 years and have watched many families grow up. It’s a wonderful experience to be working with and for the people you care about most.”

Adds Dr. Ken, β€œOur partnership draws on our strengths as a family and as individual caregivers. We offer patients decades of clinical experience, but it’s our personalized approach to preventive care that helps to keep the people in our community healthier.”

Walk into their new offices and you will immediately experience the Rexinger touch – a comfortable and relaxing environment that feels like home. When you arrive, you’re greeted by name by Dorothy, the office receptionist and Dr. Elwyn’s niece. You’re also likely to see Dr. Elwyn’s wife, Heddie, who runs the practice.

At every turn the experience is warm and personal. Dr. Elwyn, Dr. Ken and the Rexinger team take the time to really know their patients as individuals. And the reverse is true. Patients ask Dr. Elwyn about his garden and the hummingbird photos that decorate the office walls. They check-in with Dr. Ken about his sister, a respiratory therapist at Mission Hospital and his uncle Mike Akrawi, MD, an OBGYN and one of the founding physicians at the hospital. They also chat with staff about life, their families and everyday goings-on.

β€œThis is just who we are and what we love to do,” says Dr. Elwyn.

Now in an expanded new office, Dr. Elwyn and Dr. Ken have the opportunity to take on additional patients and add new members to their extended family, especially those who live in San Clemente and surrounding areas.

After all, a customized approach to health care can help make a difference in keeping people healthy and well.
