Fundraising in CUSD Creates Wealth Based Inequities in the Quality of Education Students Receive
How is your school doing?

Those schools have no ability to fundraise, get no art, no music, and no fancy outdoor science or science camps. Students in these schools are being deprived of their fundamental right to an equal opportunity to a achieve a quality education. That is not only illegal- it is morally wrong. What is worse, the State Department of Education is telling Districts that they are no longer required to have classroom instruction that aligns with State Content Standards and Curriculum Frameworks. According to the CDE, "Local Control" leaves subject content and instructional time to the individual classroom teacher. So if a teacher cannot teach all of the Algebra I curriculum- thats OK, until your child takes their college entrance exams and hasn't seen the last three chapters in their Algebra I class, and they fail to be able to compete with their peers in math on the ACT or SAT.
"Local Control" means that California no longer has any minimum standard for education. The District can cut core educational programs like art music and science, and under the state's new LCFF it is OK if only wealthy schools, who can fundraise for it, get what use to be a minimum education required for every student.
The State is condoning wealth based inequities in our public education system.

Donations of Funds and Equipment By School

In March 2016, some schools received -0- donations (almost all of the Title I schools) while a school in a more affluential area received as much as $61,000 for Science Camp and Teacher Stipends.
Then some schools like to use their donations to pay for substitute teacher coverage???? Really?
As you read this, stop and think for one minute:
CUSD cut art and music in 2010.
Parents have been fundraising for art and music (at a cost of about $100 per student in grades 1 - 5) since 2010.
Doesn't that actually equal to a $100 permanent tax on the parents in CUSD?
We already paid taxes to the State of California to fund every student with a minimum education that is defined by the State Content Standards and Curriculum Framework. Why are you volunteering to pay for the same service twice?
The State has the money to fund a basic education for every student, but is choosing not to so that the State can keep money that should go to students at the state level too be spent on other things, like high speed rail and other new programs and entitlements that are not constitutionally mandated. Our kids deserve better.
