How Jams and Marmalades can Save the World
Eco-Friendly workshop learning how to make delicious preserves and building a better future

A century ago America was all local neighborhood businesses. There was no such thing as a supermarket. Food was seasonal and you knew who grew it and where it came from. Jams and marmalades were made to help families sustain themselves during the off-seasons when crops did not grow. Now we do not need to have food preserves to make it through the winter, we just enjoy them because they are delicious!
It is difficult to find locally sourced food and almost impossible to know what exactly is in the food you buy. There are enormous amounts of pollution, waste, and health risks associated with big store bought products. An easy way to contribute to a sustainable future is home food preservation. When you make your own jams and marmalades you are able to choose to use locally sourced and organic foods, and as a result you are helping to reduce pollution and waste in the community.

You can learn hands-on how to make your own jams and marmalades at The Ecology Center. You will be going home with marmalade made by you! Just by attending this workshop you would be contributing to their mission to create a healthy and sustainable future for everyone. The Ecology Center offers several lectures, classes, tours, and events that bring awareness, knowledge and skills to living sustainably at the household and community level.

The Seasonal Food Preservation: Jams and Marmalades workshop is this Saturday February 28, 2015 starting at 1pm at The Ecology Center. The center is located at 32701 Alipaz St. San Juan Capistrano, 92675. If you are interested in the hands-on workshop, tickets are available on The Ecology Centerβs website: $40 for members and $50 for non-members. The proceeds support The Ecology Centerβs non-profit eco-educational programs for schools around Southern California.
