New Park May Be a Lot Leaner in Amenities

The San Juan Capistrano City Council will begin slicing and dicing its plans for a new park in the north end of town Tuesday.

Last month, the council learned that it had $1 million more worth of plans than it did money to build out the first phase of the Northwest Open Space’s active component.

In a special meeting that begins at 3 p.m., councilmen will look at a staff’s suggestion for paring down the proposed offerings, which could mean eliminating:

• The community gardens
• A native grass meadow
• One of two restroom buildings
• Security lighting
• Grading for a future, leased farm operation
• Concrete slabs for picnic tables
• One of two bocce ball courts

The plans would also decrease the size of the multiuse trail and reduce the number of benches from 20 to 5.

The cost of this version of the park would come in at $2,453,229, staff said, just $2,462 less than the available funds.
