Place to Learn Sustainability Skills

The Ecology Center is a unique solution-based eco-educational hub located in San Juan Capistrano with the mission to create a healthy and abundant future for all. Its programs teach practical environmental actions that can be implemented at the individual, household and community level. It hosts lectures, classes, tours, and events that bring awareness, knowledge and skills to living sustainably. As part of the programing, the Backyard Skills Workshops address hands-on solutions to issues related to Energy, Water, Food, Waste, and Shelter.

Over the past six years The Ecology Center transformed an empty parking lot to an abundant permaculture site with educational Eco-Labs. Over 55,000 people got educated on-site and another 35,000 off-site, including schools that now have gardens, and hands-on ecology education in their curriculum thanks to The Ecology Center. With a growing number of people acquiring the knowledge and skills taught by The Ecology Center, a transformation to a sustainable Southern California is possible.

Every weekend The Ecology Center hosts Backyard Skills Workshops open to the public that take people a step further in improving the sustainability of their daily life, community, and environment. In 2014 alone, 1600 people participated and learned about topics ranging from: organic gardening, fruit tree care, native landscaping, composting, aquaponics, cheese making, beer making, natural cleaning products, and natural dyes. People become inspired, engaged, and empowered to make educated changes toward a better future for themselves and the community with these workshops. Joining a Backyard Skills Workshop is transformational.
